- This is a cenotaph. He and 10 others were lost overboard in a hurricane off Cape Hatteras in Sept. 1846. Their names are listed on the side of the monument.

- Comm. Bolton died in the Mediterranean Feb 2, 1849. His body was preserved and interred in HCC, Jul 27, 1850.
- His widow became the second wife of Adm. Charles Wilkes.
- How would he have been preserved in those years e.g. Adm. Ross was returned to England in a barrel of rum after being killed at Baltimore in 1814.
