- From March 1856 until 1863 William Speiden was the Naval Storekeeper at the Hong Kong Depot.
- Speiden served as a purser's clerk aboard the Mississippi during the Japan expedition.
- Family papers in the Smithsonian, Armed Forces History Collection.
- LOC restored his two-volume journals containing many drawings and paintings in 2003.
