- An engineer at the Navy Yard when he volunteered to join the Greely expedition to the Artic (1881-1883).
- The first to die of starvation and exposure after the relief ship failed to reach the station for the second year in a row.
- The 6 surviving members of the party were rescued in July 1884 and the remains of those who could be found were returned to the U.S. There were rumors of canabalism.
- His diary from the expedition are at the Explorers Club, New York City.
- His funeral was held August 10, 1884 and was well attended both at the home and at the cemetery.
