- He had one year left to serve when the opening came up. He was willing to step aside to the next, much younger, officer in line. President Harrison named him to the post and he served one year until his retirement.
- The inscription on the tombstone:
Was appointed 2nd Lieut. in the
U.S. Marine Corps March 1856 and
served with distinction throug the
grades of 1st Lieut and Captain, Major
Lieut Colonel, Colonel and was Colonel
Commandant of the corps in 1890-91.
