- 7th Commandant of the Navy Yard (1843-1846).
- Contender for command of the U.S. Exploring Expedition.
- He and Adm. Wilkes were “at odds” for the rest of their lives.
- Adm. Wilkes took exception with Aulick’s accepting the words of officers of a British expedition disparaging the American Expedition and passing those comments on to the press. He wrote (p. 453):
The cause of this was that Capt. Aulick and his officers was one of the officers in our service who sought the Command of the Expedition before my appointment … He endeavored to take his revenge on the Expedition at the Bay Islands by writing home letters to the press in disparagement of his own country men … After the return of the Expedition he made other attempts to draw out this venom …
- Note his sons interred nearby, all serving in the military.
