  • Born in the Bahamas. Attended medical school in Edinburgh, Scotland.
  • Won the competition for the design of the U.S. Capitol.
  • Negotiated with the British to save the Patent Office from being burned.
  • Retreated to Tudor Place, Georgetown where he would have had a view of the burning of the Capitol.
  • His wife, Anna, was nearly murdered by her house slave Aug. 5, 1835 and the Snow Riot resulted.
