- Raised on the frontier of Ohio and Shenandoah.
- Married Maj. Royall, very much her senior and a veteran of the Revolutionary War.
- Inherited her husband’s estate, but the family, through litigation, eventually denied her of her inheritance.
- Travelled the east coast and into the interior documenting her travels and earning a living through her book sales.
- Arrived in Washington in 1831 to lobby for a pension as the widow of a Revolutionary War veteran.
- Editor and publisher of the “Huntress” and “Paul Pry”.
- A devoted supporter of the Masonic movement during a period of intense criticism.
- Tombstone placed in 1911 by a group of journalists who admired her courage.
- An extremely loyal supporter of the still young American nation, she could not tolerate waste of public funds, inattention to public duty and misuse of the privileges of elected office. Her criticisms were harsh to the extent that people would turn and run if they saw her coming – perhaps an indication of the extent of abuses that she sought to reveal to the public.
- Read her account of a visit to the Navy Yard.
