The Public Vault was built in 1835 with funds provided by Congress. It was used as a temporary resting place until final arrangements could be made for the interment of the deceased either in the Congressional Cemetery or at another location. The remains of three Presidents rested in the Public Vault: William H. Harrison (d. 1841), John Quincy Adams (d. 1848), and Zachary Taylor (d. 1850). The remains of two first ladies also rested there: Dolly Madison (d. 1849) and Louisa C. Adams (d. 1852). View of the Public Vault
