The only signer of the Declaration of Independence buried in Washington D.C. Elbridge Gerry was born in Marblehead, Mass.; graduated from Harvard College; Member of the Continental Congress 1776-1780 and 1783-1785; and delegate to the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia in 1787. Elected to the First and Second Congresses (1789-1793); sent to France on a diplomatic mission in 1797; and Governor of Massachusetts 1810-1811. He was elected Vice President of the United States on the ticket with James Madison in 1812 and served from March 4, 1813, until his death in Washington, D.C., on November 23, 1814. | |
