Grand Funerals

During its 200 year history, Congressional Cemetery has been the site of numerous "grand" funerals. Below you will find accounts of those funerals we have digitized to date. Please also check the other links provided here for additional information about each individual.

The funerals of three presidents, congressmen, Mexican war heros, civil war generals and prominent citizens vie for the honor of being the most "splendid". And, so too does the funeral of Lieut. J.P. Borden (1842) who died in a naval accident. His funeral procession consisted of 11 barges carrying his remains, the U.S. Marine Corp band, and numerous officers and members of the U.S. Marine Corps and U.S. Navy.
